I Need to Lose My Belly Fat

I'm not obese by any means, but I could stand to lose a few pounds. What really bothers me is my stomach. Ugh! It's not attractive and I need to flatten it. Sit ups don't work for me. Can running help me achieve a tighter tummy?

Hi Jennie – The simple answer is yes and no. Running will help you tighten pretty much everything, but not like you are thinking.

To lose one pound, you need to burn 3500 calories. Doing ten minutes of sit-ups will burn around 50 calories. So you could burn 300 calories if you did one hour of sit-ups which does not sound very appealing to me and actually would not be good for your spine or lower back.

You could already have a “six pack” but it sounds like you still need to burn some abdominal fat so that your ab muscles will be more visible. Doing sit-ups at this point is a wonderful core exercise that will strengthen your abs and hips but it is definitely not the best or quickest way to burn calories.

Running to lose weight is one of the best cardiovascular exercises out there for burning extra calories. It is a simple exercise that many people use to lose weight.

It is important that if you decide to try running to lose those extra pounds that you run on a regular basis at least 3-4 times per week.

If you are not a runner at this point, I have provided a 7 week jog walk plan that provides a free printable chart for you. I trust this will help you achieve your goal of losing a few pounds and getting in better aerobic condition without adding undue stress to your body.

It will also be very important for you to try and eat the smartest foods that will help you. If you are not already, try and eat whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beans which are all higher in fiber and provide lean protein and eat smaller portions of the higher fat and calorie foods.
