Dumbbell Front Raise Exercise 

Besides making you look better in a sleeveless shirt, the dumbbell front raise will strengthen the many muscles in the upper body. This will help you with all of your physical activities inside and outside the gym. Think about how many times a day you raise your arms putting something on a shelf or moving boxes around. Stronger shoulders can make struggling tasks a lot easier.

Dumbbell Front Raise

Exercise Instructions:

  • Position the dumbbells in front of your thighs with your arms at length and your palms facing in.

  • Take a deep breath, engage your abs and lift the dumbbells straight out in front of you You want to lock your arms briefly when your arms and dumbbells are at eye level.

  • Exhale as you slowly lower the dumbbells down to your starting position. and repeat your reps.

  • Because the exercise isolates on smaller shoulder muscles, you probably will need to use a much lighter weight than you would for an exercise like the overhead press. 

Dumbbell Side Raise

In addition to raising the dumbbells to the front, you can add in the side raise and alternate repetitions. This will work the deltoid muscles on the sides of your shoulders.

  • Start out by doing a rep of the front raise; bring the dumbbells back down to your sides with your palms facing in.

  • After a brief pause, raise them straight out to your sides forming a "T".

  • Exhale as you slowly lower the dumbbells down to your starting position. Repeat your reps. Try and do 10-12 reps to each side.

  • You might want to use a lighter weight because of the higher number of reps.

Because you are standing and holding weights for the front and side raise, your core muscles automatically engage in order to keep your body steady. This can strengthen and flatten the muscles around your midsection as you try to maintain your balance....Who doesn't want a flatter stomach?

Front Raise Benefits

  • Curved Torso -  The shoulders often get overlooked in the gym because they are not thought of as an important muscle to focus on. That type of thinking is completely wrong. It doesn't matter whether you are a guy or a girl, a great set of shoulders will make your waist look slimmer.

  • Upper Body Strength - Powerful shoulders are not just there for looks. Having a developed back and shoulders will be extremely helpful with other upper body exercises like the bench press and overhead press. It will also make everyday functions a whole lot easier.
  • Burning Calories - One of the benefits of doing a physical activity like the dumbbell front raise is how the exercise works large muscle groups like the shoulders and back. The more muscles you work -- the more calories you burn.
